Eye of the storm
THE EYE OF THE STORM
On Thursday 8th January 2026, we experienced the worst storm since we moved to Cornwall. We knew it was coming. We knew its name, and we knew why the storm had formed out over the Atlantic. In the afternoon, the weather was dreadful, the winds picked up, and things were intensifying, and then, rather eerily, early evening, it went quiet for a while. One of the weather channels I follow it said, ‘You may have noticed a slight lull in the winds, this is because we are in the eye of the storm.’ I’ve heard of this, and if you look at satellite photos you can see it, but last night we fully experienced it. It didn’t last too long, because then the winds picked up quickly and were ferocious again, causing a lot of damage.
They say the eye of the storm is the safest place to be - a protected place. The storm hadn’t gone away, it was swirling around us, but we were safe within it.
I’ve found that to be true in my life. When I face a storm – I may know exactly why it has formed and can even call it by name. It is concerning and potentially damaging, but somehow, I am safe in the middle of it. Peace in the storm. We all hope for the ‘calm after the storm,’ when daylight breaks, but there is something wonderful about knowing the ‘calm within the storm’ too. ‘When you walk through the waters, I will be with you.’ Isaiah 43:2. ‘My peace I give unto you.’ John 14:27 (Words of Jesus)
